Introduction
Functional foods contain ingredients that offer health benefits in addition to providing traditional nutrients such as protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals. Although the concept of functional foods is not new (traditional examples include fortified baby formula and margarine enriched with plant sterols for cholesterol-lowering purposes) a growing body of evidence is supporting their use as a new and exciting way to promote health and prevent disease.
Like the standard IsoWhey® High Protein Snack Bars, the Functional Range of bars is formulated as a meal replacement designed to provide a high quality, low allergenic, low carbohydrate nutritional protein snack for everyday needs with the added benefit of functional ingredients. Protein is an integral part of our lives. Without adequate protein, muscle loss can occur and organ functions diminish. Increased exercise, vegetarianism, ageing and certain disease states all increase our need for protein. Whey protein has a high biological value. This means it provides the body with the complete number of building blocks (amino acids) required for protein production and is absorbed quickly and efficiently.
IsoWhey® Bars Strawberry Yoghurt
These bars feature the added benefits of extra fibre from rolled oats as well as larch arabinogalactan, bifidobacteria and
lactobacillus. Increased consumption of dietary fibre may help to curb the appetite while probiotics such as bifidobacteria
and lactobacillus can improve obesity in humans.1 As a prebiotic, larch arabinogalactan supports the growth of bifidobacteria
and lactobacillus in the intestine.2
IsoWhey® Bars Choc Berry, Pomegranate and Green Tea
Numerous studies have linked obesity with increased oxidative stress. These delicious functional bars provide antioxidant
support to the body through ingredients such as flavonoid-containing chocolate, a rich berry blend (including blueberries,
raspberries, black currants, cranberries and more), pomegranate and green tea.

Frequently Asked Questions
Aside from its delicious taste, why should I include the Strawberry Yoghurt Functional Bars in my eating plan?
Emerging evidence is indicating that an imbalanced intestinal bacterial environment can lead to increased weight gain. Therefore, consuming beneficial bacteria (probiotics) such as those added to this bar, and nutrients that support their growth (prebiotics; including larch arabinogalactan and oats), may assist in weight management.
What are free radicals and antioxidants? Why are antioxidants important?
Free radicals are unstable oxygen atoms that seek to "steal" an electron from any molecule that is handy in order to become stable again. The problem with this process is that the removal of electrons from normal healthy cells may cause serious damage.
Although a certain amount of free radicals are formed in the body as a natural by-product of metabolism, many factors in life can lead to increased free radical production, such as obesity and diets high in fat and sugar.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are substances that seek to neutralise free radicals by donating an electron. Therefore, without adequate antioxidant support, free radicals may cause great damage in the body.
Did You Know?
- The concept of functional foods was first developed in Japan in the 1980's when, faced with escalating healthcare costs, the Ministry of Health and Welfare initiated a regulatory system to approve certain foods with established health benefits in the hope of improving the health of the nation’s aging population. These foods are eligible to bear a special seal and are recognised as Foods for Specified Health Use (FOSHU).
- Your favourite healthy snack bars now come with additional health benefits! Try Strawberry Yoghurt for digestive health and Choc Berry, Pomegranate and Green Tea for antioxidant support. Or just try them solely to enjoy these delicious new flavours!
